  11. This is a review of the new WizManager 2.0: software that could 
  12. reasonably be characterized as a happy ending to the classic, 
  13. "Search for the Holy Windows Grail." If you get from this, the 
  14. impression that I am somewhat enthused, I must hasten to reply 
  15. in the affirmative. For those who may be unfamiliar, allow me 
  16. to first give some background.
  17.  
  18. Windows File Manager is a great beginning of an organizational 
  19. tool that never reached its potential. This well-intended, 
  20. unfortunately impotent application has begged for greater 
  21. functionality since its inception. Its infamous inadequacies 
  22. bore major focus in the upgrade from Windows 3.0 to 3.1, and 
  23. have spawned the creation of many add-ins and substitutes, both 
  24. shareware and commercial. Most have been somewhat of an 
  25. improvement in various ways but until now, none have 
  26. accomplished such broad based, user-configurable functionality 
  27. from within File Manager itself. WizManager 2.0 bestows upon 
  28. File Manager the power to serve as the center of all your 
  29. Windows-based activity, should you so choose.

  31. On the other hand, you may decide to simply keep WizManager's 
  32. tools within handy reach, for those occasions you deem 
  33. appropriate. That is the beauty of this multi-faceted utility: 
  34. configurability! This powerful tool provides one (or sometimes 
  35. two) click access to virtually any command or function you 
  36. might need.

  38. This brand new version of WizManager raises its already 
  39. well-established capabilities to new heights, and brings with 
  40. it the new WizUtilities Pack containing 6 new utilities that 
  41. can function both as individual stand-alone applications, or as 
  42. an integral part of File Manager. They are:
  43.  
  44.  WizZipper     WizViewer
  45.  WizFinder     WizDuplicates
  46.  WizSynch     WizLock
  47.  
  48. We'll take a look at each of these in a moment, but first let's 
  49. examine the main features of the heart of this ingenious 
  50. add-in. 
  51.  
  52. WizManager automatically installs itself as an integral part of 
  53. File Manager. Its features are made accessible via four routes: 
  54. The Buttonbar; The Launchbar; The Command Line Box; and the 
  55. WizManager Menu. All of these features are amazing time-savers, 
  56. each in their own right.
  57.  
  58. Buttonbar - WizManager provides an easy-to-manipulate, drag 'n 
  59. drop interface to configure the scrollable Buttonbar to suit. 
  60. There are provided buttons, not only for every menu item 
  61. normally found in File Manager, but for WizManager's 
  62. specialized functions as well. No matter the window size or 
  63. resolution you work with, the Buttonbar can easily be 
  64. customized to fit. Place the buttons representing your most 
  65. often used commands immediately within your reach each time 
  66. File Manager is opened. Its scrollability allows quick access 
  67. to any buttons/commands not currently visible. This is true 
  68. one-click ease. Further, you may even drag and drop a directory 
  69. from the FileMan directory tree directly to a button, if you 
  70. are using the Windows for Workgroups File Manager.

  72. Launchbar - Fully customizable, the Launchbar gives File 
  73. Manager the power to serve as your center of operations. It's a 
  74. better program manager than Program Manager! It can be 
  75. displayed above or below the Buttonbar, and its buttons are 
  76. configurable in two sizes. These buttons can be configured to 
  77. launch an application, or to carry out practically any command 
  78. you wish!

  80. Command Line Box - This box provides a virtual "DOS within 
  81. Windows" without shelling out to DOS. WizManager provides 100 
  82. DOS-equivalent commands, complete with appropriate switches. 
  83. For those die-hards who still prefer the command line for some 
  84. tasks - this is for you!

  86. Menus - The incredible number of utilities and increases in 
  87. File Manager capability are all accessible here. This menu is 
  88. automatically added to File Manager's menu bar when WizManager 
  89. is installed. Several menu items are also added to existing 
  90. File Manager menus. The new item inserted into the Options menu 
  91. is, "Save Settings Now." You'll find this to be very handy when 
  92. you've just finished laboring to configure File Manager exactly 
  93. the way you want it to be. Commands to Tile Horizontally and 
  94. Vertically, Minimize and Restore are added to the Window menu. 
  95. Three additional items will also be found in this menu. These 
  96. are great step-savers! During the course of a Windows session, 
  97. I create and tile File Manager windows countless numbers of 
  98. times. That's why I really appreciate the New+Cascade, New+Tile 
  99. Horizontally, and New+Tile Vertically commands. I keep the 
  100. latter two handy on my Buttonbar.

  102. Now, let's look at each of the new WizApplications:
  103.  
  104. WizZipper - This utility gives you Windows-based ZIP and UnZIP 
  105. capability. Its compression and decompression routines are 
  106. totally compatible with PKZIP 2.04. It even provides the 
  107. capability to "fix" corrupted ZIP files.
  108.  
  109. WizViewer - This utility permits you to view the contents of a 
  110. file or files without having to run the program that created 
  111. them. It automatically detects and displays over 30 different 
  112. file formats.
  113.  
  114. WizFinder and WizDuplicates - These utilities employ a powerful 
  115. search engine that you'll find invaluable for managing your 
  116. hard disk(s). Their interfaces are very similar, providing many 
  117. options to refine a search.
  118.  
  119. WizDuplicates provides the above options plus additional 
  120. refinements.
  121.  
  122. WizSynch - Wiz Synchronizer is a "must have" utility if you are 
  123. working with a portable computer or with multiple computers. If 
  124. you operate on more than a single PC, invariably you'll have 
  125. information more current on one or the other of your units. 
  126. This new WizManager utility allows you to compare and update 
  127. the contents of any two directories, keeping your most current 
  128. information at your fingertips.

  130. WizLock - This unique utility does exactly what its name 
  131. implies. You may lock your running copy of Windows and walk 
  132. away without fear of security breach. Password protection is 
  133. built in, and you may lock Windows immediately upon launch if 
  134. you choose. For added security, all open applications are 
  135. immediately minimized when WizLock goes into effect.

  137. Each of these new utilities is available separately, but the 
  138. better bargain by far is the aquisition of WizManager PRO 2.0 
  139. in its entirety.

  141. I cannot applaud WizManager loudly enough. I use it 
  142. every time I open Windows, and frankly, I would feel a bit lost 
  143. without it. I strongly recommend that you download it and give 
  144. it a try. I feel certain that you will agree. WizManager 
  145. imparts an unequaled level of functionality to File Manager. 
  146. You'll wonder how you ever did without it.
